India tour of west indies
Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan have been rested while left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra has returned to the India squad for the four one-dayers in the West Indies.
The 16-member squad was announced Wednesday after a teleconference between chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth, his colleague Raja Venkat, coach Gary Kirsten and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who were in England, and other three selectors Yashpal Sharma, Narendra Hirwani and Surendra Bhave who assembled at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai. Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India N. Srinivasan convened the meeting from England.
Nehra was rewarded for his impressive showing for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa. He was the third highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets from 13 matches.
The only new face in the squad is Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, a consistent performer in domestic cricket who narrowly failed to make it to the World Twenty20.
Zaheer, 30, who had taken a huge workload by spearheading the bowling attack in the last three months, was rested while Tendulkar, 36, also sought rest because of a finger injury.
Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan, who were in the squad for the World Twenty20, were not considered. Raina fractured his thumb during the World Twenty20 and was advised two weeks' rest while Pathan failed to impress the selectors.
Munaf Patel, who was in all the three squads on the tour of New Zealand in March-April, gave way to Rudra Pratap Singh, the highest wicket-taker for champion Deccan Chargers in the IPL.
In place of Tendulkar and injured Virender Sehwag, the selectors picked two Tamil Nadu batsmen Murali Vijay and Subramaniam Badrinath.
Dinesh Karthik, who was in all three squads in New Zealand, retained his place as in-form batsman and second wicketkeeper after his consistent batting for Delhi Daredevils in the middle order.
In West Indies, the first two matches will be played in Kingston June 26 and 28, while Gros Islet hosts the last two July 3 and 5.
The squad:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain/wicketkeeper), Yuvraj Singh (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik (wicketkeeper), Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay, S. Badrinath, R.P. Singh, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Abhishek Nayar, Ashish Nehra and Ravindra Jadeja.
Pakistan's captain confident to winning the t20 worldcup 2009
They may have missed the title by a whisker two years ago, but Pakistan captain Younus Khan is confident that his side has the ability to clinch the World Twenty20 Championship this time round.
Pakistan were runners-up to arch-rivals India at the 2007 tournament in South Africa after a narrow five-run loss in the final, but Younis believes the team now has the right mixture of experience and youth to see them through.
''All our boys are very focussed - they want to win this tournament,'' Younus said after the 39-run win over Ireland at The Oval here yesterday.
''We have some good youngsters, the spinners did a great job and the fielding was very good. We would have liked to have made 170-180 today but the bowlers did very well,'' he added.
dhoni apolosiged for the defeat

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has apologised to the team’s disappointed fans after they went out of the ICC World Twenty20 at Lord’s on Sunday and promised to make amends in the West Indies next year.
The defending champions, who had also lost to the West Indies on Friday, were eliminated after they lost by three runs to England in their Super Eight Group E clash on Sunday.
“We are sorry for what happened but we can say we gave our best,” Dhoni told reporters. “I think we have the guys who can handle the pressure, it was a day when nothing really worked for us.”
Dhoni said India would bounce back at the next ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean next year. “We can definitely prove a point over there. We were never really up to the mark but in nine months time there will be another tournament and that is the only good thing we can say now,” he said.
“Cricket never tests your character when you are doing really well. It tests you when you are not doing well. I think this is a testing time for us but it's not the end of the road. We lost in the ICC World Cup 2007, that was the worst part of my career. This loss is disappointing but still I don't think it comes near to the loss we had in the World Cup in the West Indies.”
Dhoni said suggestions that IPL had adversely affected his team were unfounded. “It is a demanding format because you play at different venues, it's not like you play three or four games at the same point,” he said. “But I personally believe it's not an excuse. We failed in batting. If the opposition scores 153 and you cannot achieve that on a track like this, I don't think there can be any excuse. You just cannot explain that.”
The Indian captain was candid when he said the team lost because they did not bat well. “I'm happy with the performance of the bowlers. The England bowlers started really well. They looked aggressive and used the bouncers really well. All of a sudden our batsmen could not change their game plan.”
Asked if Yuvraj Singh should have batted up the order, Dhoni said “He could have. But we thought (Ravindra) Jadeja would go in and stabilise the innings. Once Yuvi or I are out there, we can achieve a run rate like nine or 10 an over, since we also have Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh down the order. We lost wickets at crucial times. First Jadeja got out and then unfortunately Yuvraj too got out. The timing of those dismissals was crucial,” he added.
Dhoni conceded it was difficult to replace Virender Sehwag in the squad. “Sehwag is a kind of player you cannot really replace and we did miss him. But Rohit Sharma was doing the job for us and he scored in quite a few games. Of course with Sehwag there, the batting order looks different. We missed him because of injury and you cannot do much about that,” he said.
England captain Paul Collingwood was elated with the win and he disclosed that jeers from some Indian fans worked as extra motivation for his side. “We had a lot of English supporters but we got booed at the home of cricket by the Indian fans, which was a bit strange. So that gave us a bit of motivation,” he said.
The England captain felt they should have put a bigger score on the board but was happy with the way his bowlers defended the total. “At one stage, I thought we would get 160-170 but it was a fantastic performance. We really put India under a lot of pressure. We were hoping the wicket would have pace and it did. We got the balls in good areas,” he said.
Ryan Sidebottom, won the Man-of-the-Match award for his two for 31 effort, was happy with show and said, "As a bowling unit, we did well but we have a big game tomorrow (against the West Indies) and I hope to do as well as I did today.”
india out of the t20 worldcup

A determined England shattered a billion Indian dreams at Lord’s and beyond, their three-wicket victory on Sunday sending the defending champions crashing out of the ICC World Twenty20 and giving themselves the chance to do the same to the West Indies 24 hours later in their quest to make it to the semifinals.
Even if analysts will keeping wondering why Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave an expensive Ishant Sharma a full quota of four overs ahead of the brilliant RP Singh and Zaheer Khan, the Indian bowlers did really well to stop England from making more than 153 for seven in 20 overs.
The England bowlers made admirable use of the short ball – both the usual bouncer and the slow bouncer – to harass the Indian batsmen into submission. After Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina fell cheaply for the second time in two matches, Gautam Gambhir and Ravindra Jadeja made 38 runs at less than run a ball pace and that hurt India significantly.
Stuart Broad bowled nearly three overs to the pair and conceded just 11 runs to be one of England’s biggest heroes. But left-arm paceman Ryan Sidebottom pipped him to the player of the match award with his twin strike when he dismissed Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina in the second and fourth overs of the innings.
Yuvraj Singh slammed two sixes to raise drooping Indian hopes but was stumped off Graeme Swann to leave skipper Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan with the uphill task of scoring 67 runs in the final six overs. The pair took India as close as within three runs of the England score but the home side kept their nerves to win the game.
Earlier, it was opener Ravi Bopara (39) and Kevin Pietersen (46) gave England a rousing start by adding 71 runs for the second wicket at eight runs an over, Owais Shah made an enterprising 25 to ensure that the start was built upon and that the home bowlers would have a total to bowl with.
Dhoni may have shown what many considered misplaced faith in Ishant Sharma bowling the lanky fast bowler three overs in-a-row, the third one costing him 12 runs while almost forgetting the fact that RP Singh had bowled a brilliant three over spell with the new ball that cost him just 13 runs.
Two successive defeats in Super Eight Group E meant that India’s hopes of replicating their feat of 2007 when they stormed to the title after losing their first Super Eight match to New Zealand were not actualised. England, on the contrary, gave themselves a fair chance at making the round of four by beating familiar rivals, the West Indies
how india makes to the semifinal

Condition One: India wins both of the next matches with England and South Africa with rather good margin.
Condition Two: India wins match with England with huge margin and gets defeated by South Africa but England wins over West Indies in a tight encounter.
How can it not make to semis?
Condition One: Although it wins rest of its two matches but West Indies defeats England with huge margin and makes it to semis on the basis of Run Rate.
Condition Two: India gets defeated by England and its over
Condition Three: India wins over England but gets defeated by South Africa and West Indies wins over England , its all over.
Condition Four: India wins over England and gets defeated by South Africa and England wins over West Indies and now net run rate will come in account as all the three countries except South Africa have won just one match each so if India has less run rate than either of the rest two, its all over.
In every case, if India wants to make it to semifinals of World T20, It must win its tie against England today evening otherwise my dear Indian fellow fans; it will all be over tonight

india v/s england

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said they were under pressure to qualify for the semifinals of the ICC World Twenty20 after they lost their first Group E Super Eight match to the West Indies by seven wickets at Lord’s on Friday. He was, however, confident they would still go through.
“It will bring out the best in us,” he said. “We were under a lot of pressure in the last World Cup when every game was a do-or-die game but we got through to the final and won it."
The West Indies captain Chris Gayle was delighted that Dwayne Bravo and Fidel Edwards, who picked up two early Indian wickets, produce such fine displays.
"It's not all the time that you're going to get off to a flyer," said Gayle ."It didn't happen for me today, but I'm really happy some of our younger players stepped up and it's really good for the team.
"Fidel picked up wickets at the top of the order. The majority of India's players are very good batsmen, but taking key wickets is very important."
india's set back

Dwayne Bravo went that extra mile to ensure that the West Indies’ Group E Super Eight match in the ICC World Twenty20 against the defending champions India on Friday would be talked of as his own. He claimed four wickets when his team restricted India to 153 for seven in 20 overs and then came back to make 66 (34 balls, four fours, three sixes) to halt India in their tracks.
On a day when skipper Chris Gayle – who missed a game owing to injury – was not his belligerent self, Bravo took on the role of being the West Indies’ key batsman. Promoted to bat at No. 4 at the fall of the skipper’s wicket in the eighth over, Bravo played his part to perfection, frustrating the Indians with a methodical approach and never showing signs of panic.
It did look like India had bowled themselves back into the game by getting rid of Andre Fletcher and Gayle quite cheaply but Bravo and Lendl Simmons (44, 37 balls, five fours) shared a 58-run stand in quick time before Shivnarine Chanderpaul (18 not out, nine balls) was a privileged witness to Bravo’s batsmanship during the unbroken 56-run stand that sealed the win.
The West Indians were untroubled as they picked up 16 runs off Ishant Sharma’s 17th over, 15 off Harbhajan Singh’s 18th and 10 off Zaheer Khan’s unfinished 19th – 41 runs off the final 16 deliveries – and raced home to a victory with as many as eight deliveries to spare. And this after Harbhajan Singh bowled a gripping maiden over to Gayle.
It was Bravo and Fidel Edwards (three for 24) who accounted for all seven Indian wickets that fell after Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat in the hope of mounting a tall score that could pressure the West Indies. India’s desire was not actualized, thanks to the incisive bowling the fast bowlers.
India lost Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir inside five overs and Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were forced to go on the defensive for long spells to ensure that the side did not crumble. The vice-captain and captain added 37 runs in eight overs before India mounted a charge that fetched the team 87 runs in eight overs.
Yuvraj Singh played the dual role of repairing the early damage and providing the thrust admirably. He made 67 runs off 43 balls (six fours, two sixes) and was helped by Yusuf Pathan (31, 23 balls, three fours, one six) in adding 64 runs for the fifth wicket in 5.3 overs. Harbhajan Singh hits fours off each of the last three deliveries to power India past the 150-run mark.
And hard as you tried to admire Yuvraj Singh, Bravo kept pulling the focus back on him. And, he helped the West Indies become only the second team to beat India in the nascent history of ICC World Twenty20 cricket. New Zealand had beaten India in the Super Eight stage in 2007 but India went on to win the tournament without any hiccups.
The seven-wicket defeat has left India with the task of having to win both their remaining group E games against England and South Africa to make the semifinals and give themselves the chance to retain the crown won in 2007. It threatens to be a tall order but India will have to pull themselves together quickly before playing England on Sunday.
super 8

The intensity with which South Africa and England played out a low-scoring game on a sluggish pitch in the opening Super Eight group E match in the ICC World Twenty20 showed that the pool would be a tricky one. With just 19 fours and three sixes, it hardly looked like a T20 contest but defending champions India and the West Indies – the other teams in the group – would have got the message that the scraps would be tough with no room for even a slight error.
South African opener Jacques Kallis combined the right doses of technique and temperament to steer his team to an eight-wicket victory but don’t let the margin make you believe that it was really easy for them. The fact that South Africa got home with just 10 deliveries to spare in chasing 112 for victory is a very significant indication of the highly competitive streak they needed to bring to the table.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike was the indicated course on a track that had seen a double header on Wednesday and the opening group F Super Eight match between New Zealand and Ireland earlier on Thursday. England, however, found that they were up against a bunch of bowlers who displayed variety in their trade but were bound by a common thread of determination and purpose.
Had it not been for Owais Shah’s brief tryst with enterprise at the height of a crisis, England would have finished with a score less than the 111 they managed in 19.5 overs. Shah made 38 off 33 balls (three fours and two sixes) after Kevin Pietersen’s exit slowed the scoring down for England. Pietersen struck four fours in his 19 (17 balls) but was dismissed to a great catch at mid on by Roelef van der Merwe off Albie Morkel.
Skipper Paul Collingwood was the only other England batsman to reach double figures as he made 19 at a run a ball pace. The home batsmen found the new ball bowling of Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell hard to negotiate while Kallis claimed the wickets of Collingwood and Shah to send England deeper in crisis. The spinners Johan Botha and van der Merwe bowled at a critical stage and picked up three wickets between them.
England needed early wickets to stop South Africa from making a successful chase of the 112-run target and even though Graeme Smith fell cheaply in the fourth over, Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs chose a workmen-like approach to grind England down. Kallis made an unbeaten 57 (49 balls, five fours and a six) while Gibbs made 30 off as many deliveries. Between the two, Kallis and Gibbs accounted for as many as 39 singles and 29 dot balls.
It was not easy work as the England bowlers took a leaf out of the South African book and challenged the visiting batsmen. Well as they bowlers, led by Stuart Broad, did their job, Kallis and Gibbs showed that they could be unhurried in their approach and nibble away at the target with their technique – and, more important, temperament, leaving England to rue the fact that none of their batsmen was able to play such a sensible innings.
india won

Zaheer Khan’s return to wicket-taking form and Rohit Sharma’s maiden half-century as opening batsman were the two biggest gains for India in their eight-wicket victory over Ireland in the ICC World Twenty20 group A league game at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.
The game served as a warm up for the sides ahead of the tough Super Eights battles. India face the West Indies, England and South Africa in the three group E games while Ireland join Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan in group F.
After Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss in a rain-delayed match and asked Ireland to bat first, Zaheer Khan prised out openers Jeremy Bray and William Potterfield with successive deliveries in his first and second overs. Andre Botha denied him a hat-trick but the Indian left-arm paceman had him edging to slip at the end of his second over.
Zaheer returned to claim the wicket of top-scorer Andrew White (29) to a regulation catch by Dhoni and the team drew heart from the fact that Zaheer Khan looked in good form, despite having just recovered from a shoulder injury that kept out of a good part of the DLF Indian Premier League.
While left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (two for 19) and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (one for 25) played their roles to perfection, India will be worried by the fact that Irfan Pathan conceded 15 runs in his third over, bowled in the death against tail-enders. Also, Ishant Sharma looked less effective when bowling first change rather than with the new ball.
Expectations that India would get to the 113 run target in quick time were belied when the openers Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma seemed unhurried and focussed on building a good stand. They raked in 77 runs in close to 11 overs before Gambhir departed.
Batting at No. 3 again, Dhoni did not last long but Rohit Sharma (52 not out, 45 balls, four fours and one six) and Yuvraj Singh ensured that there would be no further trouble for India as they broke the tape with 2.3 overs to spare.

Ryder hospitalized
New Zealand batsmen Jesse Ryder was admitted to a London hospital after missing his team's Twenty20 World Cup loss to South Africa in England, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement today.
Ryder was forced to pull yesterday's game against South Africa at Lord's, because of a groin muscle injury and team officials later took him to hospital because of ongoing pain after the one-run loss.
''Jesse is continuing to suffer serious discomfort and has been admitted to hospital overnight for observation and further tests,'' team manager Dave Currie said in the statement. ''We hope the picture will become clearer in the next 24 hours.'' Currie said New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was receiving treatment to a shoulder injury that had forced him out of New Zealand's two matches so far.
Ross Taylor was being monitored after straining his hamstring while batting but left-arm paceman James Franklin was expected to play in the next stage despite a knee problem.
South Africa V/S Newzealand
South Africa Tuesday eked out a thrilling one-run victory over New Zealand by defending a modest total of 128 runs in an inconsequential World Twenty20 Group D match, as both the team have qualified for Super Eight stage.
Put into bat first, South African bastmen struggled against a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack and could make only 128 for seven in 20 overs at the Lord's.
Skipper Brendon McCullum's half-century went in vain and New Zealand fell short by one run losing five wickets.
McCullum led the chase with a valiant 57 off 54 balls but Man of the match Roelof van der Merwe spun his team to an exciting win by picking up two crucial wickets and conceding just 14 runs from his four overs.
Left-arm spinner Van der Merwe got Brendon stumped by Mark Boucher at a time when the New Zealand captain was on song and also castled Ross Taylor's (22) stumps to derail their run chase.
Jacob Oram made a fighting 24 but couldn't manage the winning run off the last over bowled by the 19-year-old left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell, who kept his head cool and bowled a sensible line to deny New Zealand a win.
Earlier, South Africa failed to capitalise on a steady start given by openers Graeme Smith (33) and Jacques Kallis (24).
In the absence of skipper Daniel Vettori, who missed the second consecutive game in the tournament with a shoulder injury, pacer Kyle Mills spearheaded the New Zealand bowling attack and got some movements while lanky seamer Ian Butler spitted fire with his raw pace and swing and picked up two wickets for 13 runs from his four overs.
Off-spinner Nathan McCullum, elder brother of Brendon, and Scott Styris with his slow medium pacers arrested the South African run flow.
Some big hits by Jean Paul Duminy (29) and AB de Villiers (15) in the last few overs helped South Africa cross the three-figure mark.
Dhoni, Sehwag controversy
India's cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday refused to take any questions from the media on his deputy Virender Sehwag's fitness.
Sehwag has been ruled out of the World Twenty20 due to an apparent shoulder injury and will return home.
On the eve of the match against Ireland, Dhoni was asked about Sehwag's fitness and he said: "Whatever is related to fitness, you will get it from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India)."
Asked why he could not provide information on his players' fitness, a miffed Dhoni said: "I'm not going to say anything on that."
But when asked whether he was aware of Sehwag's fitness, Dhoni replied: "Yes, I am."
Dhoni's indifferent attitude on Sehwag's fitness infuriated mediapersons.
Dhoni also lost his cool when asked if news of Sehwag's fitness was deliberately leaked.
"You are blaming me for leaking the news... you have all gathered here. Then why doesn't one of you stand up and..." Dhoni said, but he was cut short by a journalist, who said: "No we are not (blaming you)".
The team's administrative manager, V. Chamundeshwaranath, who was by Dhoni's side during the media briefing said, interjected to say that a decision on Sehwag's fitness will be taken by Wednesday. But surprisingly, within a few minutes, the BCCI issued a statement saying that Sehwag has been ruled out and named Dinesh Karthik as his replacement.

Virender Sehwag was today ruled out of the World Twenty20 due to a shoulder injury, for which the Indian opener will have to undergo a surgery.
Sehwag is likely to travel to South Africa for the surgery, which may keep him out of action for a month, sources said.
The dashing opener was earlier forced to skip India's opening tie against Bangladesh on June 6, including the practice session.
Sehwag's fitness being a major concern for India ever since the team arrived here in England, Rohit Sharma has been partnering Gautam Gambhir at the opening slot and has fared well in the three opportunities that he got.
India will take on Ireland tomorrow. However, the defending champions have already progressed into the Super Eight stage.

australia v/s srilanka
Australia made a shock exit from the World Twenty20 after losing by six wickets to Sri Lanka here late last night, their second successive defeat in the tournament.
Captain Kumar Sangakkara steered his team to victory with 55 not out as Sri Lanka overhauled Australia's total of 159 for nine with six balls to spare, clinching victory with a Mitchell Johnson wide.
Makeshift opener Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 53 from 32 balls to give his team a solid start to their chase.
Just when Australia looked to be fighting back, Sangakkara crashed two consecutive sixes, a sweep over square leg and a drive over long-on off off-spinner Nathan Hauritz.
Dilshan registered his half-century from just 26 balls with an audacious vertical flick shot over the wicketkeeper's head for four off Shane Watson, his 10th boundary. He was bowled by left-arm spinner Michael Clarke six balls later.
Australia lost wickets regularly throughout their 20 overs, David Hussey and Johnson top-scoring with 28.
They struggled with the unorthodox off-spin of Ajantha Mendis, who claimed three for 20 from his four overs in his first game against the world's leading team of the last decade.

aussies exit

Disappointed at his team's first round exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup, Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels the absence of controversial all-rounder Andrew Symonds upset the balance of the squad.
Symonds, one of Australia's most effective Twenty20 players with 337 runs in 14 matches, was sent home before the start of the tournament for violating team rules on alcohol consumption.
His substitute Shane Watson was disappointing in the six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka yesterday, scoring just 22 runs and conceeding 24 runs in two overs.
''It upset a lot of our structures around the team,'' a crestfallen Ponting said after the match.
''Andrew is one of those guys that's just been over in the IPL for the last couple of months.
''He's one of the best individual players in this form of the game anywhere in the world, so when you lose someone like that out of your side it does throw a spanner in the works for sure,'' he added.
However, Ponting refused to blame Symonds' absence for Australia's disappointing performance.
''We're not going to use that as a reason or as an excuse.
''We had 14 other guys here that had to step up in his absence,'' he stated.
''I haven't actually heard any talk about Symo not being around over the last few days, so I would like to think that that hasn't played on the minds of any of our players.'' Talking about Australia's successful campaign in the 2003 ODI World Cup despite losing legendary all-rounder Shane Warne on the eve of the tournament, Ponting said the retirement of key players has also contributed to the team's downfall.
''We've been able to do that and good enough to do that in the past when we've lost some of our better players out of the side and over the last few days we haven't been good enough,'' he rued.
